ISO 50001:2018 is an international standard that outlines the criteria for an Energy Management System (EnMS). It is published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is applicable to any organization, regardless of its size, sector, or geographical location. The standard is designed to help organizations establish the systems and processes necessary to continually improve their energy performance—including energy efficiency, energy use, and energy consumption—thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions, environmental impacts, and energy costs through the effective application of an EnMS.

Process Approach: ISO 50001:2018 emphasizes the adoption of a process approach to managing energy. This means that organizations are encouraged to identify and manage interrelated activities—such as energy data collection, energy review, and operational control—as a cohesive system, rather than addressing energy conservation projects or utility tracking in isolation.
Context of the Organization: Organizations are required to consider the internal and external factors that can affect their ability to achieve the intended outcomes of their energy management system. This includes evaluating corporate sustainability targets, local utility constraints, energy regulatory policies, and understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties such as energy suppliers, regulatory authorities, and shareholders.
Risk-Based Thinking: ISO 50001:2018 promotes the adoption of a risk-based approach to energy governance. Organizations are required to establish an Energy Baseline (EnB), track Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs), and systematically monitor, measure, and analyze data to demonstrate quantifiable improvements in energy efficiency.
Operations & Procurement Focus: Organizations are required to ensure that energy performance is integrated into daily operations and capital investments. This involves implementing operational controls on Significant Energy Uses (SEUs), establishing energy efficiency criteria for the design and modification of facilities, and prioritizing energy-efficient products and services during procurement.
Documentation Requirements: While the standard avoids creating excessive red tape, organizations are required to maintain documented information necessary for the effectiveness of the EnMS. This includes documenting energy reviews, the methodology used to establish EnPIs and Baselines, and evidence of operational monitoring and training.
High-Level Structure (HLS): ISO 50001:2018 follows the High-Level Structure (HLS), which provides a common framework, identical clause sequencing, and standardized terminology across all ISO management system standards. This makes it highly compatible and seamless to integrate with other core business frameworks, such as ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 9001 (Quality Management).
